How to Maintain Your Value at Work
If you think you are 'competing' with machine learning...think again....
In the age of digitalisation, AI and more and more powerful automation, now, more than ever it is important for you to reassess your value in your organisation. As companies look to restructure for the future are you ensuring your value is acknowledged?
Ask yourself;
‘How do I position myself differently at my company?’
“The best way to predict the future is to create it” Abraham Lincoln
“Success is readiness meets opportunity”
Think strategically about how you’re crafting the impression you make on your organisation- that means your network- supervisor/seniors, peers and people you may lead. Tell stories about how you’re solving problems- not just listing out your accomplishments.
Here are some things to consider;
Before you think about positioning, make sure you can answer the following questions:
• Where have I been, and where am I now?
• Where do I want to go with my career?
• In 15-20 words summarise the value you can bring to your organisation. If you are
seeking a new role, how do you differentiate from all the other potential candidates?
• What are the needs of the organisation right now? What gaps are they looking to fill?
• What are your strengths and gifts?
• How do you promote yourself and your credentials in a convincing, understandable
way for employers?
• How are you intentionally communicating your value to the employer and network?
• How strong is your network? Can you make it even stronger?
The above questions will help you to surface what you love doing and what you are good at. You should also reflect on what you want to say and what your organisation wants to hear.
Socialising your ‘brand’- what you stand for, your expertise, attitude, values, etc.- takes effort and focus and there are many things you can do;
• Write
• Speak
• Teach/mentor/coach
• Look for external engagements- panels, etc.
• Answer questions
• Be available
• Offer insights
• Have opinions
• Network, network, network!
All the above comments will help you continue to create impact as a leader in your organisation. Machine learning cannot do this! Remember, business is a human endeavour, based on human emotions and connections. Make sure you are creating maximum value and impact in this space.
